Dr. Mahitosh Mandal has made outstanding contribution in cancer research. He has identified specific genes and their biological functions in various cancers. In USA Lab., he has cloned Metastasis Associated gene 1 with ER-binding motif which stimulates malignant phenotypes. Also he discovered a link between telomerase activity and cancer progression. While at IIT, Kharagpur, he established a new Division of Cancer Biology where he has made significant contribution in developing newer targets for treatment and prevention of cancer. He showed that incorporation of an anti-EGFR molecule with VEGFR for chemotherapy can be more effective in treating patients with locally advanced or metastatic breast cancer. Mahitosh has also shown that Diacerein, an IL-6 inhibitor offered a novel blueprint for cancer therapy by hampering IL-6 /STAT3/MAPK/Akt network but without any toxic effects. Presently, he is engaged in nanoparticle mediated drug delivery and has shown that celecoxib-loaded Hap- Cht nanoparticles in colon cancer can serve as an effective and safe means of delivering the drug. Currently, he along with a team of oncologist, physicist and engineers are trying to determine specific molecular, bio-physical and bio-electrical changes in cancer cells during malignant transformation and acquisition of chemo-radioresistance. An outstanding contribution of Dr. Mandal as evidenced by majority of his publications in high impact factor Scopus indexed journals.
