Our vision is to have medical academic institute with a multi-specialty research centre at its core, with the motto of education and collaboration for biomedical research and development, alongside treatment and health care delivery. On the occasion of its hemi-centennial celebrations in 2001, IIT Kharagpur,under the auspices of its dynamic director Amitava Ghosh, inaugurated the School of Medical Science and Technology. The first and only one of its kind in India,this school was an attempt to train M.B.B.S doctors in the engineering aspects of medicine in a rigorous and compressed format for two years followed by a yearof internal or external training. Later it also opened up its arms to PhD students who are a part of its research.
The school was started with the objective of providing an inter-disciplinary platform in diverse areas of medical science and technology which includes, but is not limited to, biomaterials, tissue engineering, reproductive biology, medical biotechnology, medical instrumentation, cancer biology and wound healing, MEMS and biosensors, medical imaging and image analysis and molecular imaging. In collaborations, with some of the best medical organizations and industries in the world, SMST is poised skywards.
